The best waste is the kind that isn’t created in the first place, and anything that can’t be avoided must be disposed of properly. We’ve already implemented many measures in the backstage and production areas and are constantly optimizing them—and, of course, it’s also up to you to get involved and take responsibility.
We rely on a well-thought-out system that supports both us and you in recycling:
Waste Management Concept Backstage: We’ve got everything under control! In the backstage area, crew members and partners sort waste into designated containers. This ensures that as many materials as possible are returned to the recycling loop.
Waste Management Concept in the Guest Area: Waste Management Concept in the Guest Area: Upon entering the festival, you’ll receive one trash bag per person at the checkpoints, which we provide together with our partner RE:CIRCLE. The trash bags are made from 100% recycled materials and bear the Blue Angel eco-label. There are recycling stations throughout the festival grounds. A look at the festival map will give you an overview. At the stations, you can sort and dispose of your trash.
Trash Bonus: To reward you for your support, we’ve introduced the Trash Bonus system! For every trash bag you turn in, you’ll receive great vouchers—a small thank-you for your contribution to a clean festival experience. Every bag helps keep the grounds clean.
Clean Grounds: After the festival, we’ll launch a major cleanup to restore the grounds to their original condition. We’ll collect all trash—big and small—using both machines and manual labor. By leaving your campsite just as you found it, you’ll help ensure the grounds are ready for agricultural use right after the festival. Be especially careful not to use plastic confetti—even if it looks nice, it’s a real burden on the environment and very difficult to remove completely. Instead: use biodegradable confetti or, better yet, skip it altogether!
Reuse it: Drinks are served in our stylish returnable cups, which you can simply return at any bar. The cups are washed and then reused. Also keep an eye out for Viva con Agua: Our partners collect your donated returnable cups and use the proceeds to support meaningful projects. Tents, sleeping pads, and sleeping bags don’t have to end up in the trash either: Anything you no longer need can be donated on-site to Hanseatic Help. Under the motto “After summer comes cold”, they accept your gear at designated locations, clean it, and pass it on to those in need—for example, to homeless people in Hamburg.
Additionally, there is a drop-off point for non-perishable and unopened food items, which are donated to the food bank
Strategies against mountains of trash: Over the years, we’ve developed a variety of measures to steadily reduce waste, and we’re working hard to further minimize waste, optimize waste management at the festival, and raise everyone’s awareness. In festival production, too, we’re focusing on more sustainable processes, such as through digitalization and avoiding paper materials. But we know: There’s still more we can do! Together with you, we want to continue working to reduce waste to a minimum and make the festival as clean as possible.
By the way: A look at the statistics shows that the amount of waste per festival guest at DEICHBRAND is lower than the German national average for the same period. Thank you for participating and supporting us—every contribution counts!
